Going through the local trash

Postby Iznougoud » Sat Jan 16, 2010 5:03 pm

Cracked open a disgarded PC, and found what seems to be a socket A 3200+ inside (AXDA3200DKV4E) with the stepping code AQXDA and the somewhat odd date stamp 0412SPMW.

Regardless a nice surprise, and I will eventually see how it runs in my socket A-system which has been sporting a 2500+ for the last 8 years.

Nice find Izzy. It's amazing what a dumpster dive can sometimes turn up.

Nice find. Most I ever see around here are early Pentium I's and II's, and the occasional PIII. Nobody ever throws away AMD stuff.

There are Dummies throwing good stuff away everywhere.

I hope you got a good board with it and good memory too.

How about the video card?

I'm still looking for a few good spills here and there.

Thank God for for the dummies.

The CPU will go into my Asus A7V600 board, which is far from top of the line, but good enough. The RAM in it is PC3200 all the way, and a mix of Kingston and Samsung if I remember it correctly. I did have some issues with it before I managed to single out one stick of Kingston-RAM - which didn't interact well with the other stick of Kingston(!) so it should be up to the task.

As for GPUs - I've got an almost unused GF7600GT with 256Mb VRAM which I may, or may not, throw into that mixture - it's got a fan that's kind of - loudish ;) And the present ATI x800 seems to do quite well.

One thing though: One of the rubber pads on the CPU is missing. Normally I wouldn't give it much thought, but since this board is using the Big Typhoon cooler, I really wouldn't want it to produce uneven stress to the CPU - hence, four rubber pads would be preferrable. Any thoughts on that?

1) You could pull the other three off and be real careful installing the BT.

2) You could find another CPU and use a razor blade to carefully remove one of the rubber pads from it. Then glue that rubber pad to your processor with a small drop of super glue.

I've run Socket A processors with no rubber pads at all. That worked. Just be careful installing the heatsink or water block.

Find a dead chip and you can use the AS5 two-step cleaning stuff (Step 1 cleaner) to make the glue let go, then use silicon such as black Form-A-Gasket to attach it to the chip. Make sure it's completely dry of the step one solution and use only a dab of silicon to attach it and let it fully cure before using. I've fixed a chip or two that had it's pads fall off this way.
I don't really suggest using it without all four pads in place due to the risk of killing it if it's a good chip and the rarity of a true XP-3200 200 FSB chip like that one.
Dead chips are useful sometimes though.....

I'll go through my box of "chips that might come in handy for whatever reason" then, and see what can be done. I'm in no hurry replacing the Barton 2500+, so I'll do this in my own good time. Which is a nice change. Will be interesting to see if there will be a noticeable difference once it's in place though. The 2500+ performs surprisingly well in day to day tasks, but the increase in memory bandwidth alone should have some impact.

i fudged a spacer with a piece of balsa on a socket a chip that was missing a pad, but grafting one pruned off a dead chip (using a razor blade) is good too

locally the council just banned e-waste in bi-annual clean ups as of the new year :smt009

i am devastated - the last one saw my daughter score me a gig (single stick) of ddr400, and i've scavenged many a fine heatsink for my southbridges on older boards.... it's a sad thing to lose that resource :smt010

Teach 'em to " Scrounge " when they're young.

Someone elses' trash is someones treasure.

I used to live in an apartment complex that was rather large,
On or about the first of the month there would be people moving out and they just dumped all sorts of stuff next to the Dumpsters and they dumped good stuff that I helped myself to.

The pads aren't essential. Just take extra care fitting the heatsink. Like GR says you can use a piece of cardboard to keep it level whilst attaching the heatsink clip.

Come on, fire that dude up! You'll notice the difference for sure.

Could you post a scan of it before you install it?

Nice find, footlong. Please tell us what model(OPN) it is, it could be a gem 8-)

Was there any SODIMM RAM left in the lappy? Might come handy if patching up some other item.
