Here we go again - AN7 with the dreaded 90 code

Postby Bones » Sun Jan 03, 2010 9:07 pm

Now my newest board is doing it. Tried several CPU's, a different PSU, BIOS resets, a different BIOS chip known to have a good BIOS file on it and everything.

The machine had sat for a few weeks before it started again and upon firing it back up, was greeted with the code. Had worked fine up until it sat before and during the cruise.

Don't know what's going on with these boards but it's starting to get old quickly. I'm wondering what the common causes of such behaviour would be to give me ideas on what to check - Yes I've already placed a new battery in the board.

How about a new cmos battery?

If that doesn't work, disconnect all the power. Unplug the power cords to the board. Unplug everything - mouse, keyboard, IDE and Sata cables. Remove video card, remove ram.

Then clear cmos. Then reassemble everything. Then reconnect the power plugs. Turn on PSU. Attempt to restart the board.

Do all that in that order Bones. If that doesn't work, do the same thing all over again, but also remove and then reinstall the CPU as part of the process.

My Abit i915 AG8 board sometimes has the same problem. The above steps are what is required to bring it back to life. The same thing may work on your AN7.

Let us know, okay?

Battery is brandnew and always get a fresh one if I run into problems or receive a new board as a precaution. I know UGuru eats batteries and that's why I placed a fresh one in to be sure.

Perhaps a redo of the assembly will fix it - I'll try it and see.

Try a different cpu fan, NB fan if applicable.

It would be good to know what hardware is connected and has been tried.

Normally, when I get a code 90, I pull the outside stick of ram and boot. After it boots, I shut down, kill the power, and reinstall the outside stick.

the 2 most common things that cause a code 90 are CPU diode overtemp, and memory.

Thanks SA for the tip and Eagle, I'll check the NB fan to be sure it's OK. The CPU fan is working normally so shoudn't be a problem.

Sometimes you just need to remove and reseat the processor, Bones.

I'll keep plugging away until I can figure it out one way or the other. I'd hate to waste this cold weather we're having here. Getting into the teens tonight and will be that way for almost a week or so I'm told.

Yep, that's it Bud.
Who said it doesn't get cold down here at times? I know for some of you that's not very cold but it's cold enough. Only thing is it will tend to warm back up, then get cold again as if the weather can't make up it's mind what to do.

Did you get a chance to try these suggestions, Bones?

Disconnecting and reconnecting everything with the power totally unplugged?

Plus removing and reseating the processor if the above doesn't work for you?

Right now I have the DFI in place and it's doing better than it's ever done so far. Still no match for the AN7 or A7N for bus speed but it will let it get some MHz.

I'll get back to it in a day or so. Had a reason to go ahead and get the DFI up instead and it's paid off so far.
May even have to let one of the A7N's get a piece of the action while the cool weather is here.

I will once I finish what I'm currently doing with the DFI. As for the AN7, I'll try it again after I give one of the A7N's a shot. Received the XP-M 2800 from Jeighty and it's gone at least 2750MHz in the DFI so far. :D

Maybe it will clock up in the others too.

In the 39's right now with the low bus speeds I'm getting from it. Believe I'll go for a new record on my part with the A7N sometime tonight or in the morning.

I'll respond to this after I get the AN7 going or determine it's got real trouble to keep the thread on track. If I do get a new record time, I'll post that elsewhere.

Tried the other AN7 and it shuts down almost immediately after I power it on, about 1 sec from the time I hit the power button until it cuts off. Starts to boot but quickly ends up with a 99 code when it shuts down before it can POST.
Believe that's what it was doing earlier and it's detecting something it doesn't like. BIOS resets, different CPU's, RAM, ect doesn't change a thing. I placed one of the XP-M 2800's in it (The one I've been using) and I know the chip is good.

I'll need to inspect the board for anything obvious going on with it. As for the other AN7, haven't tried it since letting the DFI have a go but the A7N didn't do too badly earlier today. Maybe I can get one of these up and running again soon. If not, I'll start hunting for another one but with the luck I've had with these, I don't know how it would turn out.
Maybe the AN7's don't like me or something. :smt104

When you've given up all hope on the AN7s send them this way Bones. I'd like to try them just for the heck of it.

What you are describing is exactly the same thing my Abit AG8 i915 mobo was doing recently. Unfortunately, it sounds like what fixed it didn't work on your boards. Maybe you've got damaged traces somewhere?

I don't know how that could have happened since it began doing it when I swapped a CPU and it's done that ever since. The one I got recently is probrably something I can recover from since the older of the two had done it before and got it to work again after fiddling with it. I'll keep working with these to see what the ultimate outcome will be.
