An old Evo, how to boost

Postby go_for » Wed Mar 03, 2010 2:00 pm

Checking a relative's old laptop, compaq Evo N800v. It is in mint condition but suffers from lack of memory and it is slooow. Max config is 2x512MB.

Seeing this also was shipped with a 2.4GHz P4M.

Anyway, recall there were some P4s/400 that could be tricked into going 133MHz fsb, how about this one?
Would the motherboard support it? The RAM is already at that.

I recall someone at this forum made a similar upgrade for an older laptop.

Perhaps should hunt down another CPU to tinker with.

I now regret I sold off a P4 1.6GHz and 2x256MB sodimm DDR :(

That's actually a good laptop, I love its graphics (that LCD is one of the best I've yet to see on Laptops). As for the CPU, I think you've done fairly well since mine has a 1.7GHz one. I don't think there's any modding you can do on that board to trick the CPU, only hope you'll find a compatible 2.4GHz CPU (but make sure you've got enough cooling since it tends to get hot under load, cooling isn't a good side on that model).

If it is similar to the socket 479 pin-out, I can show you how to pin mod the fsb from 100mhz (400mhz) to 133mhz (533mhz).

I did this on my 479 1.4ghz Dothan Celeron about 4 years ago to bump it up to 1.83ghz with no ill effects. It has been going steady, even had it folding for about a year or so, non-stop. Of course, your results may vary, as P4's put out a little more heat than these Dothan Celerons..

I had an old write up somewhere, I will see if I can dig it up anyways.

No need for a write up, believe me when I say cooling is non-existent on this model. Thermal throttling is something you simply have to live with if you plan on using this intensely. The stock fan simply isn't enough to get the job done right. At least not on mine, anyway. I'm guessing the better ones (with better CPUs) have better cooling than mine...

If that is anything like my HP xz133, it may have the 845 chipset like mine, which supports 533 fsb. I'm contemplating deliding a 2.4 /533 P4M to try in mine.
